Building good neighbourhoods

Elderly people living alone, the intellectually disabled and the disadvantaged: these and many others less privileged than us are being sought out by dedicated youth volunteers who swung into action last weekend. Thousands of people will benefit from their efforts. They will offer rice to street sleepers, give seniors a haircut and arrange tutorials for children from low income families.

This territory-wide initiative is called Youth Volunteer Action. An HKFYG Neighbourhood First programme, it was kick-started by the Federation's Neighbourhood Lunch last Saturday. Ethnic minority people in need, laughter yoga for everyone and handy used goods for deprived families are all included in the services. Even caring for people's abandoned pets is on the agenda. Run by HKFYG's Youth SPOTs and fired up by the energy of over 1,700 young volunteers, they show clearly how committed young people can be.
