DSE candidates, you are not alone!
It has taken a long time for the candidates, but finally, the HKDSE began last Friday. This has been an unusual and unprecedented academic year for all students, but especially stressful for the over 50,000 students who sit for this important public exam. Supporting them is especially relevant.
The pressures this cohort has had to face in the midst of lockdowns, social distancing and online learning, on top of their regular study, is unquestionable. But we want the students to know that they are not alone. The HKFYG's DSE 27771112 have handled about 3,900 calls from 29 January to 23 March 2020, double when compared to the same period in 2018 - 2019. Over 60% of callers are worried about the virus and cleanliness of exam venues, with many others expressing their lack of motivation to study, as well as thought of giving up due to so many uncertainties and a lack of proper preparation, including physical mock exams under examination conditions.
In view of all these very real concerns, the HKFYG and the Faculty of Education of The University of Hong Kong have joined hands to set up a platform on Telegram for Form Six students to answer their questions on 11 subjects. We have also collaborated with major tutorial centres to provide subject guides online. To give emotional support, in addition to hotline and online counselling, we have invited former DSE candidates to film video clips sharing their advice, and to distribute hand-written cards with supportive messages.
All in all, we hope students can focus on their goals, be clear of their progress, and most importantly, seek help from others when facing difficulties. These are challenging times and we want to send all the students sitting exams a message that we, as a community, are there to walk them through this.
