Turning Points in Life

Everyone of us has made a mistake at some point in our lives. Some mistakes are bigger than others, but the important thing is to learn and move on.

Yin was obsessed with earning a quick buck and so turned to drug trafficking. Caught, he went to prison at the age of 16 and spent seven years inside. However, thanks to his parents' support, as well as the encouragement from his correctional officers and teachers, he decided to turn his life around, studied hard while incarcerated and then earned a bachelor's degree upon his release.

Yin was one of this year's eight 15-30 year-old recipients of The Turning Point - Youth Improvement Award given by The HKFYG Youth Crime Prevention Centre. For the past seven years, we have witnessed amazing efforts of young people to turn their lives around and become law abiding, contributing members of society.

What we have learnt is that companions matter. Whether friends, family, teachers, colleagues or social workers, the support and encouragement of companions, with their guidance, can make a big difference.

We ae so grateful too the Lions Club of Tusen Wan for its continued support for the Award, and the Correctional Department for some of the nominations.

Why don't you too become a companion for young people who have reached a turning point in their lives? Sometimes all it takes is a word of kindness or  an embrace of acceptance; and you will see how great the change can be.
