Turn Over a New Leaf
Adolescence is not easy and sometimes, teenagers feel the need to rebel and be contrary. This can be because of peer pressure, family issues, or just plain boredom. However, this does not have to end badly; support and guidance can be essential ways for them to start afresh.
Take the example of young Tao, who at 16 was not only a drug addict, but had also been arrested and remanded for burglary. But, with his mother's unconditional support and love, he decided to turn his life around and break his drug habit. Now clean, Tao has become a peer counsellor at the same residential drug treatment centre he was at in the hopes of helping other teenagers like him get back on the right track.
Thanks to continued support from The Lions Club of Tsuen Wan and The Correctional Department, Tao and other seven recipients aged 15-30 received The Turning Point 2021 - Youth Improvement Award. Given out by The HKFYG Youth Crime Prevention Centre, the award aims at recognizing the efforts of those who have turned their lives away from drugs, gangs, and other criminal behaviours to become law-abiding, contributing members of society. Tao, along with seven others, really exemplifies this turn around, as well as illustrating the meaning behind this year's theme of 'Resilience'.
There is always hope and the opportunity to turn over a new leaf. Why not come and do your part with your encouragement and companionship; vital assets for young people facing numerous challenges.
