Building a Harmonious Community

Neighbourhoods play a significant role in our social life and having a strong relationship with neighbours has a positive impact on the whole community. But in this very busy city, how can we be more neighbourly?

For the second year, the Chan Cheung Mun Chung Charitable Fund Limited has extended their support to 15 HKFYG Youth S.P.O.Ts to launch "Neighbour - Buy and Delivery 2.0". The aim is to get young people to make a difference in the lives of those who need it most, helping people in difficulty and building up a strong neighbourhood support network.

Beginning in June this year, 150 youth volunteers were paired up with 300 senior citizens, suffering with chronic illnesses to be their carers. Online training was provided to strengthen the skills of the young volunteers in social services. They then visited the elderly, assessed their needs and helped them to purchase necessities, and show care and concern through regular telephone calls. The young volunteers were able, with the service recipients, to build up a community networking programme which further enhanced a wider network of connections.

Those participating also have the opportunity to come up with innovative ideas in responding to community needs and, if successful, can receive a subsidy to put their plans into action. This way, the young volunteers not only learn the art of caring for others, but can also test out their creative thinking and problem-solving skills.

The secret to happiness is helping others. So let's support young people in serving their neighbours in need, so as to build a harmonious community!
