A Step Forward in Digital Inclusion
Digital devices have become the main source of communication and information acquisition. However, those with lower digital literacy can then be left out. This is especially so of the elderly, who may find themselves further isolated and vulnerable as a consequence. To rectify this, some young people have decided to take a step to bridge the gap.
With funding from The Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Fund, the Federation is launching Digital SAY, which represents Seniors and Youth, to promote inter-generational digital inclusion. The programme will engage young people to enhance the capability and interest of the elderly in learning and adopting digital technologies, as well as foster youth employment at the same time.
The programme will recruit and train 50 young people, in five batches, to form a "Digital Caring Team". Through visits to homes and elderly centres, the teams will teach the elderly how to use digital technologies. We believe that by giving them access to the digital world, they will be able to improve their physical health, enhance their cognitive abilities and enjoy entertainments through this new platform and technology. A social network - "Happy Internet Club" - will also be formed among the elderly to provide companionship and maintain a healthy social life online.
Meanwhile, career guidance services will be provided to the young participants in the programme, including trainings in use of digital devices and interpersonal skills. Upon completion of services, they will each receive a small subsidy for their efforts.
Young people aged between 18 and 35, who are currently unemployed or underemployed are encouraged to take advantage of this exciting programme: using their own skills, gaining work experience and at the same time, helping to bring the elderly into today's digital world!
