Growing Up Drug Free
Drug addiction destroys lives, not only from a health, but also social perspective. To tackle this scourge, it requires a diversified approach that includes treatment and policies, but most of all, understanding and compassion. This has long been the aim of the Federation.
With the continued support of the Beat Drugs Fund, the Federation is launching three projects this year, targeted at reducing the risk of drug abuse and use to ultimately, one hopes, achieve abstinence among young people.
A new and novel approach to tackle drug use and abuse is in the form of sports and the arts. With a positive focus to channel young people’s interests and latent talents, Sport Beats! will help young people to strengthen their physical fitness and nurture their sense of team work, discipline and good habits which provides life long benefits. Through this programme, participants may also consider opportunities of a career in sports.
The Adios, Anti-cannabis a cappella Theatre aims to educate young people on the harm of drugs, particularly cannabis. The participants will be encouraged and directed to improve their self-image, build up their resistance to taking drugs and to establish a positive attitude towards life through different artistic forms, including a cappella and drama trainings and performances.
In the more traditional treatment and rehabilitation route, the Federation has initiated the Healthy Transition II - Preventive and Education Programme for Substance Abuser with Mental Health Issues. This programme targets anyone from 10 to 35 from among the general youth population, youth-at-risk, those engaged in drug taking behaviours, as well as those having already been diagnosed with mental health or drug abuse issues. The programme will include an Anti-drug Anime Festival and an Online Mental Health and Anti-drug Promotion Platform to promote accurate and useful information on mental health and common drugs. Screenings and assessments of mental health symptoms and substance abuse, using tools developed from Healthy Transition I will be conducted and those who require it, will be referred for further intervention. Psychoeducation and treatment will also be provided for targeted youth-at-risk to raise their awareness of anti-drug behaviour and positive life engagement.
We all want our young people to grow up drug free, so please support us with your encouragement and companionship. Together, we can provide the young generation with choices, helping them build up confidence to reduce the recurrence of substance abuse.
