Becoming Digitally Ready

We live in a digital world where knowledge and skills in this area are not just in high demand, but are essential for progress and development. Those who lack digital skills can get left behind and see their prospects continually diminish. This is especially so for young people from less advantaged backgrounds.

As a result, the Federation, with the help of The Starbucks Foundation, is launching a programme that will enhance the digital skills and competence of those between the ages of 18 and 25 who have been unable previously to access this knowledge.

The programme, "Career STARTER", comprises seven areas of information technology to make these youth, including those with special educational needs, digital ready for the future. The areas of focus are entitled: Self-understanding, Training, Abilities, Reflection, Transformation, Exploration and Readiness.

The project will be divided into two stages. At the fundamental stage, all 60 young recruits will focus web-development and UX/UI design. This serves as an introduction and for 15 participants who show more interest in these areas, they will be provided with in-depth and advanced topics. The other young talents will receive support from other services, including those offered by the Labour Department and will receive career and vocational support and guidance from the Federation. Those in the advanced group may also be able to have a workplace visit to the Head Office of Starbucks and other IT-related industry; receive a one-month internship; and be helped gain hands-on experience.
