Youth Participation in Urban Planning

The issues that young people have to face sometimes seem immense. They also sometimes seem a bit remote. Like the future of cities and urban planning for example.

However, given the complexities and urgency of climate change, population growth and decline, pollution and a raft of other issues, urban challenges really should be at the forefront of areas for young people to consider now.

With this in mind, the HKFYG Leadership Institute, together with the Urban Renewal Authority, will launch a training programme on urban issues for secondary students in F3 to F5 entitled, URA Youth SPEAK Programme. The purpose is to get the young participants knowledgeable and able to speak on areas such as inefficient land use, traffic congestion or environmental degradation, especially as they relate to public policy.

The training consists of two stages. The first, consists of eight-sessions focused on increasing basic knowledge and looking at issues from legislative, policy and planning perspectives. Students will also learn communication skills through debates and public speaking. The second stage will see the participants try to implement their ideas through pitching activities to the management of Urban Renewal Authority.

Young people as the future is not a cliché; it is a fact. So too is the fact that they are full of good ideas.

Join us in this interesting and potentially life changing programme, as we instruct young people to be  Self-motivated, Progressive, Empathic, Agile and Adaptable and Knowledgeable - the best way to SPEAK!
