Energising the Community

How can we best reach those in our community who might possibly feel alone, especially during Chinese New Year? For us, the answer lies in our dedicated young volunteers who reach out and try to touch the lives of others.

Through our NEIGHBOURHOOD First Reunion Lunch, held on January 14th, over 1,000 volunteers distributed "Reunion Packs" to over 1,000 families in need in Hong Kong's 18 districts. With prepared Lunar New Year snacks and decorations, hygiene supplies and vacuumed "poon choi", among other things, the young people showed their care and help the more vulnerable feel the warmth of the Lunar New Year.

"NEIGHBOURHOOD First" is an annual flagship programme of the Federation to encourage community building through youth-led services. When Covid was at its peak, the Reunion Lunch format was replaced by home visits. That was a challenging time for everyone, but rewarding for our volunteers. As Mei-yee, an 11 year NEIGHBOURHOOD First veteran, found when she helped the elderly conduct home deep cleaning and sanitising, while also engaging them in simple board games to help exercise cognitive skills. Also enhancing the social impact of NEIGHBOURHOOD First, a campaign entitled My Ideal Community saw 30 youth volunteers distribute healthy lunch boxes and organic vegetables, with the support of our partners, to street cleaners and building security guards.

Helping others, especially those who might feel forgotten is not only something to do during the festive period; it is an all-year commitment to energise the community through love and care.

As we enter the Year of the Rabbit, let's make this commitment together so that our community may grow in strength, prosperity and happiness!
