From Past Mistakes to New Achievements

We all make mistakes. However, we at the Federation believe that the mistakes that youth sometimes make due to bad choices or being led astray, does not mean that they have no potential for correction and growth.

With continued support from The Lions Club of Tsuen Wan and The Correctional Services Department, The Turning Point 2023 - Youth Improvement Award once again recognises those young people who have had the courage to turn their lives around.

Now in its tenth year, the Award recognises efforts of those who really want to change their pathway and make a contribution. This year, nine winners aged between 15 and 22 were chosen. Some were involved in drugs or had been arrested for various crimes. With the help of their families and social workers, they were able to re-establish purpose and be committed to pursuing healthy lifestyles. Their stories have been compiled into an e-book called "Turning Point VIII", which aims to deepen society's understanding of their experiences and growth needs.

During the Ceremony, the Guest of Honor, Deputy Secretary of Justice, Mr. Horace Cheung Kwok-kwan, JP, encouraged young people to pursue correct and meaningful life goals. As he mentioned, with Hong Kong seizing opportunities of national development, the younger generation would be able to pursue their ideals according to their own wishes.

We are proud of all these young people. As the story of one of our awardees, Chi-hong (a pseudonym) highlights. While in high school, Chi-hong had an impulsive nature and was always getting into disputes, even being issued with the Police Superintendent's Discretion Scheme (PSDS) after a fight. However, his teachers never gave up on him, always encouraging him to manage his temper, and learn how to be more convivial. This positive reinforcement in spite of his negative behaviour, had a great impact on Chi-hong who transformed himself and now is a valued member of his school. His story is a testament to the transformative power of determination and self-improvement.

Be inspired by these amazing stories of transformation and please continue to support these young people with opportunities to lead a brighter future with a right mindset and positive guidance.
