Making Cultural Waves

The beating drums; the pulling in unison; heading in the same direction with a common goal; the cheering support from the banks, and in the middle of this, learning about new cultures. This was Hong Kong's young people, sharing the culture of Dragon Boat racing with their peers in Antwerp, Belgium.

The Federation, with the generous support of the "Funding Scheme for International Youth Exchange" under the Home and Youth Affairs Bureau and Youth Development Commission, organised a Belgium Sports Cultural Exchange Tour in June. This journey brought together 20 young paddlers and ten youth volunteers, united by a shared purpose to foster cultural connections and ignite new era of global exchange and understanding.

The HKFYG young paddlers were invited by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Brussels, main sponsor of the event, to compete in the 10th Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival Antwerp. They raced against 20 other teams in the mixed 200m standard boat race. After an exciting day of competition, the HKFYG team won the awards for Best Mixed Team and First Best Team, shattering a decade-long record.

Beyond the races, the HKFYG youth volunteers were invited to set up an engaging game booth at the Festival. Over 2,000 visitors, including senior officials from the local government, had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the vibrant culture of Hong Kong.

Let’s support Hong Kong’s young people as they forge links with their global peers, and let’s applaud their achievements on an international stage!  Making friends and promoting positivity is really what the world needs now.
