Making a Difference

We have become increasingly aware of climate change and the roles and actions we must undertake if we are serious about making a difference. Yet oft times, we don’t know where to start.

In collaboration with the ICBC (Asia) Charitable Foundation, the Federation has been encouraging young people to make a sincere commitment to environmental stewardship through the “Youth Decarbonisation Platform,” Hong Kong's first online initiative promoting youth climate action through daily tracking.

Over the past year, this platform has been integrated into schools, empowering primary and secondary students to become agents of change. More than 200 "Campus Decarbonisation Ambassadors" have designed and implemented innovative carbon reduction initiatives, ranging from month-long low-carbon diet campaigns to no air-conditioning challenges. Consequently, over 14,000 students across Hong Kong have been mobilised to participate in this vital movement.

Recently, we convened at the HKFYG Jockey Club Organic Farm to celebrate the outstanding contributions of the over 200 ambassadors from 14 schools. The ceremony not only recognised their achievements, but also provided them with hands-on learning experiences, allowing them to share innovative ideas for cultivating green campus cultures and explore sustainable farming practices.

We look forward to expanding the programme and nurturing the next generation of environmental leaders. Together, we can transform awareness into actionable steps for a greener tomorrow!

Youth I.D.E.A.S. think tank latest report No. 84 on " Insights into the Lives of Community Carers and the Cared"
Key findings
●  Home caregiving is a long-term challenge. Many carers start with little preparation and often sacrifice their work, rest, and social life, leading to increased stress

●  Effective care relies on healthy interactions and mutual understanding between carers and those they support. However, conflicts often arise, adding extra strain to these relationships
●  Many facilities are not elderly-friendly, making daily activities, doctor visits, and transportation challenging. Improving community support with a people-first approach is important
●  Gerontechnology could ease pressure and improve care, but concerns about its usability and impersonality limit its adoption
●  Although caregiving can be suddenly needed, early planning is crucial. It is important for everyone to prepare in advance to enhance the aging experience

Major recommendations
●  Pilot whole-person care by a multi-disciplinary team to implement a holistic elderly-centred care model
●  Develop a structured training framework for community carers and encourage medical-social collaboration for course delivery, while also advocating early planning for aged care and strengthening public education
●  Set up gerontechnology experience labs in districts with higher elderly populations to increase adoption rates
●  Review the inclusiveness of community facilities and transport by promoting intergenerational community design

Interview period 16 May to 13 June 2025
Respondents 36 carers and elderly care recipients
