The newly launched Northern Metropolis: Youth in Action, organised by The HKFYG Leadership Institute, addresses this question by offering young leaders a platform to explore, experience and help bring this emerging economic engine to life.
As the Northern Metropolis evolves into a hub for innovation, technology and cross-border integration, the initiative equips participants with the strategic insight to contribute fresh ideas and civic energy. Through policy and urban analytics, field studies at key infrastructure and development sites and exchanges with senior policymakers, industry leaders and urban planners, participants will examine the forces shaping Hong Kong’s future.
The monthly Northern Metropolis Youth Roundtable will further connect young people with professionals and community partners to turn ideas into practical strategies for activating the region.

Aims to bring organic farming, smart agriculture technology, and Black Soldier Fly biotechnology right onto school campuses
Core learning experiences include
● On-Campus Farming: Building smart organic farms directly at their schools
● Tech Application: Installing IoT soil monitoring systems to practise precision agriculture and conserve water resources
● Ecological Cycle: Introducing Black Soldier Fly food waste recycling systems to experience the circular use of resources
● STEM Learning: Recording hands-on crop and Black Soldier Fly cultivation data to learn data analysis and scientific inquiry

Youth I.D.E.A.S. think tank latest report No. 88 on "Making Hong Kong's Five-Year Plan Count for Youth"
Key findings
● Over 80% (83.2%) of respondents agreed that young people have a responsibility to voice their opinions on social planning, with over 60% viewing the Five-Year Plan as personally relevant
● Respondents reported moderate life satisfaction (an average score of 5 out of 10), with anxieties stemming from high living costs, housing affordability, intense workplace competition, and limited upward mobility
● Respondents prioritise livelihood facilities over industrial placement in the Northern Metropolis
● Experts note Hong Kong's market-oriented focus means familiarity with long-term planning takes time; this initial Plan provides a reference for future work and cultivates a forward-looking mindset
Major recommendations
● Introduce a dedicated "Youth Chapter" and pilot Youth Impact Assessments in future Five-Year Plan documents
● Formulate Target-Driven Youth Development Indicators and build a youth-friendly Northern Metropolis
● Set up a "Committee for Future Foresight" to cultivate long- term strategic thinking
